ABOUT US
Philip Yenawine
A nationally-recognized thought leader and educator, Philip Yenawine revolutionized museum education when he developed an inquiry-based teaching protocol called Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) thirty years ago at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. He has partnered with Hailey Group since its launch.
After leaving MoMA, Philip co-founded Visual Understanding in Education (VUE) with Abigail Housen, a nonprofit educational research organization that used art to teach thinking, communication skills, and positive group dynamics. In 2013 he published Visual Thinking Strategies: Using Art to Deepen Thinking Across School Disciplines (Havard Education Press), one of his many influential publications.
With Hailey Group team members Philip Yenawine and Corinne Zimmermann, Dabney cofounded VTS@Work, the first program to deeply train and certify professionals in VTS facilitation and its application on business and other materials.
Philip’s decades in museums impacted several major institutions. He directed education programs at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art, was founding director of the Aspen Art Museum, and taught at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago and Massachusetts College of Art. He was the George A. Miller Visiting Scholar at the University of Illinois in 1996 and was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2003. He was the first educator in residence at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in 2012. He is on the board of Art Matters, a foundation supporting contemporary artists, and the Good Works Foundation.
Currently, he is Creative Director of Watershed Collaborative, a nonprofit focused on providing ongoing online VTS training for K-12 teachers working across the globe.
